Organization Tips for WAHMs

Organization Tips for WAHMs

There is no doubt about it, organization is the most important aspect of your journey as a successful work at home mother. Without organization, you’ll find that there will be a struggle between your work life and family time. You may even notice that time for yourself is non-existent as you are busy trying to catch up with all of your other responsibilities. The key to enjoying your family, work, and still having time to nurture your own needs is to be organized.

To begin with, you will need to organize your work schedule and your family schedule. Take a look at the best time to work, and make sure to include factors such as children’s schedules, nap times, when your husband comes home from work, and family meal times. You should never continue working when your husband or children come home. If you do, you’ll find that it won’t take very long before your family begins to resent your work schedule. By taking the time to create a schedule, you will begin organizing the most important aspect of your work at home career- your time.

Once you have your time scheduled out, you may feel that you are through with organization, you’re not. You’ll soon discover that even the best schedules aren’t always adhered to. There are many things that can interfere with your daily work schedule; unexpected visitors, telephone calls, and even a disorganized office can leave you feeling exasperated and accomplishing very little. Not only do you need to allot special time for completing your work assignments, but you also need to take steps to make sure that you maximize the most benefits during your work time.

It seems that as soon as neighbors, friends, and even family members discover that you are home all day, they think of a million reasons why they should come over or call you on the phone. You’d be amazed at how many people will suddenly come over and ask you to baby-sit or see if you have an extra cup of sugar they can borrow. You may find that the best solution is to put up a do not disturb sign during work hours. It’s also a good idea to let people know beforehand that you cannot be disturbed when you are working. It may be difficult to remain firm in your resolution not to entertain visitors during work hours, but you’ll find that after a few unanswered knocks at the door, your visitors will get the message and you’ll be able to complete your work undisturbed.

It’s also a good idea to put a second phone line in your home, or turn your home phone off during the day. When you are working, you should have one phone line that is in use for business calls. If you set your home phone to answering machine or voice mail, you can prevent wasting precious business hours trying to end lengthy yet trivial telephone conversations that not only rob your time, but also your profits. By keeping your family life, personal time, and business hours well organized you’ll soon be accomplishing your goals and prospering in all areas of your life.
