10 ways to remember the sacred in daily life
Life can blur by at such dizzying speed that you barely have time to breathe, let alone notice what’s in front of your nose. Here are 10 ways to recover the divine energy that surrounds us all.
Break bread like you mean it. Resist the urge to rush through a meal. Instead, try increasing your connection to the material world by savoring every morsel. Let the food linger on your tongue for a moment and try to separate out the different taste sensations: sweet, salty, sour, bitter...
Commune with nature. Rediscovering the beauty in nature can be a powerful source of strength. Make it easier to appreciate that power by biking or walking to work. Take a nice evening walk while the weather is still warm. Or wake up early and enjoy the sunrise.
Lose the static. Turn off email for the day. Throw your phone in the closet. Enjoy the sound of silence---and the instant stress relief it brings.
Leave work at work. Would it be terrible if you didn't bring your laptop home tonight? No, but it may force you to embrace what’s waiting at home with renewed energy and focus.
Make beautiful music. Many studies can attest to the healing power of music. Dust off that guitar in the corner or tickle the ivories. Or simply put on your headphones, lie back and notice every magical chord.
Play with a furry friend. Animals are masters at living in the moment. Learn from them. Admire a cat preening in the sun. Bury your face in your dog’s furry belly. Luxuriate in the sensation of just being.
Draw, paint or doodle. It can be very transformative to connect with your own creative juices. And you don’t need to be Picasso to do it.
Crank up the stereo and dance. Kids instinctually dance to music because it feels good, but as adults we don’t always surrender to the instinct. This time, don’t fight it.
Pray out loud. Talking to a higher power--or even just talking to someone close to you who has passed away—is not only comforting, but it can also make you feel part of something bigger than yourself.
Remember the power of touch. The physical sensation of living, breathing skin is healing and awe-inspiring in itself.
